Roger Federer claimed to have enjoyed his five set match with Gilles Simon on Wednesday, but the Swiss would no doubt have preferred to have dealt with the Frenchman quickly, in order to conserve his energy for the later stages of this year’s Australian Open.

Federer will, however, be pleased that Friday’s third round match is against veteran Belgian Xavier Malisse, a player who has beaten seven times in seven meetings. It is just 1.04 at Bet365 that the world number two beats the 30-year-old, who is yet to drop a set himself in Melbourne.

Malisse is 15.0 at BetFred to beat the Swiss, but the problem for the Belgian is that his game is very similar to Federer’s, although just not as good. It should be a straight sets win for the second seed, at 1.4 with Bet365, which will allow him to regain fitness ahead of a last 16 match with either Sergiy Stakhovsky or Tommy Robredo.
