Roger Federer faces close friend Stansilas Wawrinka in the Australian Open quarter finals
Stanislas Wawrinka has improved immeasurably in the last 12 months, largely down to the 25-year-old’s work with esteemed coach Peter Lundgren, who has been credited with helping the Swiss to make the jump from top 20 player to quarter finalist at the last two Grand Slam tournaments.
Wawrinka will be a top 10 player this year but, unfortunately, he won’t be making his first major semi final in the 2011 Australian Open. That is because he has been handed the worst possible draw in Tuesday’s semi final, against close friend and compatriot Roger Federer.
The pair won Olympic Gold in doubles in Beijing in 2008 and are regular training partners. Unfortunately for Wawrinka, this means that Federer knows his game inside out and it shows in an 8-1 head-to-head record in favour of the world number 2. Wawrinka has, in fact, only ever taken three sets from Federer in competitive matches (including his one win).
It is 1.25 at
Boylesports that Federer beats Wawrinka and that price will attract plenty of big-hitters, while the 3-0 win for the second seed is also an attractively priced 2.38 with the same firm.
