As great a champion as Roger Federer is, there is now a growing feeling that the Swiss’s days of dominating men’s tennis are coming to an end and Novak Djokovic can put a nail in Federer’s coffin on Friday, in the semi final of the 2011 Australian Open.

While it would be ridiculous to suggest that Federer is washed up, the fact is that he has not made a Grand Slam final since he won in Melbourne last year, losing to Robin Soderling in the quarter finals of the French Open, Tomas Berdych in the quarters at Wimbledon, and Djokovic in the semis at the US Open. It is clear that the top players in the world no longer fear the 16 times Grand Slam champion in the best of five format.

That is certainly the case for Djokovic, who has stepped up his game in the period of Federer’s decline. It used to be assumed that Andy Murray was the biggest challenger to the dominance of Federer and Nadal, but the Serb has made number three spot his own and has even kicked on, closing the gap between himself and the pair above him.

After winning the Australian Open in 2008, Djokovic went on something of a barren run, where he made just three Grand Slam semi finals in two years, until last season. In 2010, the world number three made it to the last four of Wimbledon, then went one better by making it to the final of the US Open and he has made it three semi finals in a row in Melbourne.

Not only did he achieve a greater consistency in the four majors last year, Djokovic also tasted Davis Cup glory with Serbia. The 23-year-old was the crucial player for his side and achieved huge national acclaim for his performances in the final over France, which he won, virtually single-handed.

It is 2.75 at Bet365 that Djokovic beats Federer on Thursday and should he do so, it could mark a change in the dynamic of power between the two players, as it would be two Grand Slam matches in a row that Djokovic has won against Federer. If he manages this feat, then he would have to be considered the favourite to push on and add to his one major title.
