Two former Grand Slam winners meet in the third round of the 2011 Australian Open
The biggest match of the 2011 Australian Open so far comes on Friday, when Justine Henin takes on Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round. Henin is, of course, a seven times Grand Slam champion and one of the all-time greats of women’s tennis, but Kuznetsova is a double major winner and, despite a slump in form last year, she is still a formidable opponent.
Henin will, however, go into the match full of confidence. She wasn’t great in her opening match, against Indian qualifier Sania Mirza, but the Belgian looked comfortable against Elena Baltacha in round two. She holds a 16-2 head-to-head record over Kuznetsova, which is huge in these kind of match-ups.
Kuznetsova is yet to be tested in Melbourne and had two easy, straight sets win in rounds one and two. She will have to raise her game to trouble Henin and, although that is possible, the feeling is that the Russian is still a little bit away from being at a level to beat one of the pre-tournament favourites.
