Francesca Schiavone played in the longest women’s singles match at the 2011 Australian Open on Saturday, beating Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 1-6, 16-14. This came after the Italian had already been involved in a 9-7 final set decider against Rebecca Marino in the second round and the 30-year-old must surely be exhausted, ahead of her quarter final match with world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki claimed another straight sets win in her fourth round match and despite not playing well, the Dane has yet to drop a set, or even face a tie-break this year in Melbourne. She is playing like a champion and there is a strong chance that the 20-year-old will be lifting the Australian open title at the end of this week.

Bookmakers are clearly expecting that Schiavone will struggle against the number one seed and Blue Square have installed Wozniacki as the 1.14 favourite, with another straight sets win 1.44 with the same firm.

These odds are, however, very short and it may be better to take the Dane on the handicap. She is 1.8 at Stan James to beat the number 6 seed by more than six games, which is a line that Woznaicki covered in her last two wins over Schiavone last year.

Recommendation

Match Handicap (-5.5 Games) – Caroline Wozniacki (1.8, Stan James)
