Bernard Tomic may be ranked 209th in the world, but he carries the hopes of the home nation on his shoulders for this year’s Australian Open. The 18-year-old showed in qualifying for the Sydney Open last week, where he beat Lukas Kubot and Michael Berrer, that he has the potential to be a star of the future and he is being well backed to beat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the first round in Melbourne, at odds of 1.72.

Chardy is ranked at number 44 in the world, but the Frenchman has been horrendously out of form recently and has failed to win a single match on the ATP Tour since a good run in the Shanghai Masters last year. He should, however, have enough experience to come through against young Tomic and odds of 2.00 look generous for the 23-year-old. Chardy will, however, have to overcome a partisan Melbourne crowd, which could be a struggle.
