Andy Murray breezed through what looked like being a tough match against Jurgen Melzer on Monday, beating the number 11 seed 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 in a match that will have made the other Australian Open contenders sit up and take note. The Scot was rewarded for his brilliance when number 5 seed Robin Soderling was beaten later in the day by world number 46 Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Murray will, undoubtedly, be pleased to be playing the Ukrainian, as opposed to the Swede, for a place in the semi finals in Melbourne. The British number one won their only meeting, in the Davis Cup in 2006, and will be confident that he is playing well enough to avoid the fate of Soderling, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Benjamin Becker, who were all beaten by the 22-year-old.

The advantage which Murray has over those players is his returning. No-one has returned better in Melbourne this year than the world number 5 and it has shown in how easily he has won his matches, securing at least a break of serve in every set so far in Melbourne. Murray has, in fact, managed to win more games when returning than he has lost, which is a phenomenal statistic and one which really augurs well for the Scot.

Monday’s win over Soderling was the second match in a row that Dolgopolov has been taken to five sets at the Australian Open and the sheer volume of tennis which the Ukrainian as had to play in Melbourne is going to be a huge disadvantage to him. He now has barely any rest before he faces another of the world’s top 5 players and it could all catch up with him on Rod Laver.

It is 1.62 at Blue Square that Murray wins in straight sets and it would be a big surprise if he didn’t manage to do so. Dolgopolov deserves a lot of credit for his run to the quarter finals of the Australian Open and he will be rewarded in the world rankings but, unfortunately, it will be one game too many for the promising youngster.
