Third seeded Roger Federer plays Argentine 11th seeded Juan Martin del Potro in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open 2012. The match will be played on Tuesday, January 24.
Federer’s passage into the last-eight has been fairly easy with the former world number one from Switzerland winning all his matches in straight sets. Australian Bernard Tomic was expected to give him a tough opposition in the fourth round, but Federer romped home to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory over the hometown favourite.
Earlier, Federer had got the better of Alexander Kudryavtsev and Ivo Karlovic in the first and third round respectively while getting a bye in the second round from German Andreas Beck in the second.
Barring the first round match against Adrian Mannarino when he was stretched to four sets, del Potro’s opponents haven’t tested him too much. He defeated Blaz Kavcic 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in straight sets in the second round before five and seven games respectively in the third and the fourth round of the tournament.
The Swiss holds a 7-2 win-loss record against del Potro but what should give the Argentine some heart is that his two wins came in the last three matches.
The last time Federer and del Potro played at the Australian Open was in 2009 where the Swiss blanked the Argentine in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.
In the process, del Potro defeated Lu Yen-hsun and Philipp Kohlschreiber over the next two matches.
The Roger Federer v Juan Martin del Potro Australian Open men’s singles quarter-finals match will be played on Tuesday, January 24.
