Top-seeded Novak Djokovic plays fourth-seeded Andy Murray in the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2012.
While Murray did not break into too much sweat in his quarter-final match against Kei Nishikori, Djokovic overcame an injury scare before defeating David Ferrer in a hard-fought three-setter.
Murray defeated Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 while Djokovic needed two hours, 15 minutes for his first two sets before taking the third one 6-1 to reach the semi-finals.
In the earlier matches, Djokovic dropped only 10 games in the first three rounds against Paolo Lorenzi, Santiago Giraldo and Nicolas Mahut. Lleyton Hewitt did take a set off Djokovic but it wasn’t enough to stop the world number one from advancing to the quarter-finals against Ferrer.
After dropping the first set in the competition to Ryan Harrison, Murray has had it rather easy. He beat Édouard Roger-Vasselin in the second round, Michael Llodra in the third and then crushed Mikhail Kukushkin in the first two sets before his opponent retired because of injury.
Murray and Djokovic have played 10 matches against each other, with the Serbian leading 6-4 in the head-to-head. However Murray will take heart from the fact that of the last five matches on hard court, he has won four. The only time Djokovic came home trumps was in last year’s Australian Open final.
The Djokovic v Murray Australian Open men’s singles semi-finals match will be played on Friday, January 27.
