After a short rain delay, Dulko, who knocked out 20th seed Ana Ivanovic in the second round, applied pressure early on Zvonareva’s serve. She set up two break point opportunities in the opening game, but blew her chances as the hard-hitting Zvonareva held.

Zvonareva, a semi-finalist at Melbourne Park last year, notched a break early in the second game of the opening the set and sprinted to a 3-0 lead.

Dulko had nothing to trouble the 25-year-old Russian, who took complete control of the set as she gained another break and jumped to a 5-1 lead.

Zvonareva wasted no time dominating on the return of Dulko’s serve and took advantage of her opponent’s rising error count. She needed just 30 minutes to take out the set 6-1 after Dulko hit a backhand wide.

The 36th-ranked Dulko continued to struggle with her serve in the breezy conditions as the world No.9 snatched an early break in the first game of the second set. Dulko then broke back immediately when Zvonareva dumped a forehand into the net.

Both players could not hold their service games in the third and fourth games, each player handing the other a break with a double fault.

After trading breaks of serve, Dulko started to find her range, giving Zvonareva greater competition contesting long rallies and fighting her way to numerous deuce battles. Games then went on serve until Zvonareva clinched a crucial break in the 11th game for a chance to serve out the match. The Russian closed out the set and match with a backhand winner down the line.

Zvonareva has set up a clash with seventh seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the round of 16. Azarenka cruised past Italian Tathiana Garbin 6-0 6-2 earlier on Saturday.
