Vera Zvonareva will face Petra Kvitova on Wednesday in an eagerly anticipated quarterfinal contest

Vera Zvonareva is on course for yet another strong showing at a major event, and stands only three victories away from a maiden Slam title. The World No. 2 finished 2010 in great form, and has taken this forward here in Melbourne. Her 6-4, 6-1 victory in the fourth round over Iveta Benesova looked comfortable, and she should enter her quarterfinal matchup against Petra Kvitova with no shortage of confidence.

No. 25 seed Kvitova has also produced some admirable displays at this tournament. A straight sets win against fifth seed Samantha Stosur in round three currently stands out as a highlight, though her fourth round victory against Flavia Pennetta was also impressive. Kvitova had been a set down against the Italian, but came back to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Kvitova and Zvonareva have a 1-1 head to head record entering this match, and this doesn’t appear to be the easiest match to predict. Zvonareva won the only previous hard court meeting between the pairing back in 2009 at Indian Wells (6-3, 6-1). Kvitova then beat Zvonareva in 2010 on clay in Rome (6-4, 6-0).
