Vera Zvonareva will meet Lucie Safarova on Friday in the third round of the Australian Open

Vera Zvonareva got off to a poor start in her second round match against Bojana Jovanovski, but recovered to record a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. She will face Lucie Safarova on Friday for a place in the fourth round. Safarova, a Czech left-hander, has enough in her arsenal to give the world No. 2 plenty to worry about it. She’s a former quarterfinalist here, and not to be overlooked.

Safarova reached this stage by edging a tense three-setter against Klara Zakapalova. A fairly defensive approach worked for Safarova here, as she drew 53 unforced errors from her compatriot. The same approach might not serve her quite so well against Zvonareva, who is also very capable of playing a solid defensive game.

Zvonareva and Safarova have never met each other in competitive play, so it will be intriguing to see who takes the initiative early on. Zvonareva will enter the match as the favourite, though this doesn’t look like it will be a one-sided encounter.
