Williams will open the Hisense Arena on Monday January 17th.
The Hisense Arena is not the main Arena at the Australian
Open however it is the secondary arena and it does feature world class talent.
On Day 1 the Arena will feature 4 matches as part of a busy overall day at
Melbourne Park.
Here's the Order of Play for the Hisense Arena with a court
start time of 11am local on Monday (that's 7pm ET on Sunday):
Men's Singles - 1st Round
Thiemo de Bakker(NED) vs. Gael Monfils(FRA)[12]
Andy Roddick(USA)[8] vs. Jan Hajek(CZE)
Women's Singles - 1st Round
Venus Williams(USA)[4] vs. Sara Errani(ITA)
Justine Henin(BEL)[11] vs. Sania Mirza(IND)
Sania Mirza is a qualifier at the Australian Open and surely
drawing Henin in the first round, a finalist from last year, is a stroke of
back luck for the Indian national.
The match that promises to be the most competitive of the
four matches above is the Monfils vs. de Bakker match as the Dutch national
could be a little bit under-rated at this point. However Monfils, who is the
last player to defeat Federer in an ATP recognized match, would do well to get
off the court in about 2.5 hours.
American tennis fans will be looking forward to seeing their
two top players in the draw open their campaigns as Roddick and V. Williams
both begin their Australian Open on Monday as well.
