Tuesday looks set to be an exciting day here in Melbourne, with Roger
Federer, Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych, Stanislas Wawrinka and Caroline
Wozniacki all in actionThe mens quarterfinals will begin with an all-Swiss encounter between Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka. Federer has been in almighty form ever since the U.S Open, losing only two of his last thirty-three matches. He began the season by winning the ATP Doha Open, and stands out as the major obstacle in Rafael Nadal's bid for the Rafa Slam. He faces a tough match against fellow countryman Stanislas Wawrinka here, so can't afford to get complacent. Wawrinka was in dominant form against Andy Roddick in round four, firing an unbelievable total of 67 winners in the space of three sets.
Next up will be an eagerly awaited contest between Tomas Berdych and Novak Djokovic. Both players were in scintillating form in round four. Berdych shot down ninth seed Fernando Verdasco, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, whilst Djokovic humbled Nicolas Almagro in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0. On current form, Berdych and Djokovic can both be considered genuine contenders. This has all the makings of a classic.
The womens schedule opens with German dancing queen Andrea Petkovic up against ninth seed Na Li. Petkovic has taken to performing a victory jig every time she wins, and so far it seems to be serving her well in Melbourne. She's played well all week, and progressed to the quarters with an accomplished 6-2, 6-3 victory over former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova. Li will be looking to put a stop to Petkovic's run though. Li has been in top form in Melbourne, and is yet to lose a set in the competition. Her 6-3, 6-3 win against eighth seed Victoria Azarenka certainly turned a few heads.
The final match in the womens singles draw on Tuesday will be Caroline Wozniacki versus Francesca Schiavone. Wozniacki is closing in on a maiden Slam title, but will need to work hard against the No. 6 seed. Wozniacki will undoubtedly be the fresher of the players here. The Dane eased past Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 6-4 in round four, whilst Schiavone was drawn into a three set marathon against Svetlana Kuznetsova (6-4, 1-6, 16-14).
