It was billed as the master against the apprentice, and in this case the master, Roger Federer, came out well on top.
Federer, the third seed, defeated Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday night to progress to the quarter-finals and finish the strong run of the local favourite.
The Swiss maestro easily outplayed Tomic, who, once he had his serve broken mid-way through the first set, never threatened to come back into the match.
It took just one hour and 44 minutes for the four-time champion to close out the match, as he broke Tomic's serve six times.
Federer hit 45 winners to Tomic's 13, and produced five less unforced errors.
More to come.
