A stunned Rod Laver Arena crowd saw Sharapova, who missed last year’s Australian Open following shoulder surgery, struggle from the opening few games as Kirilenko showed no fear.
Former world number one Sharapova, winner here in 2008, was fancied to do well again this year and when she levelled the game at one-set each, any early fears of a shock looked to have disappeared.
But in the third round, Kirilenko made her opponent pay for basic errors and some erratic serving, racing into a 4-1 lead. Sharapova showed brief signs of a comeback before Kirilenko looked nervous when serving for the match at 5-3.
But Sharapova's serve continued to work against her as Kirilenko went on to cause one of the biggest opening round upsets in recent history here.
