Sharapova dumped out of Australian Open

Andrea Petkovic achieved a shock victory over Maria Sharapova in Sunday's fourth round clash

Maria Sharapova exited the Australian Open on Sunday following a 6-2, 6-3 defeat against Andrea Petkovic. In an unusually erratic performance, the former World No. 1 made 30 unforced errors against the German, who will now make a maiden Slam quarterfinal appearance.

Sharapova had a mountain to climb after going 2-0 down in the second set, and couldn’t provide enough of a fightback to turn the tables. “It definitely wasn’t there”, admitted Sharapova after the match. “Last year I was gone on Monday. I stayed a little longer this year…but there are many things that didn’t work today. I didn’t get my first break point until it was a set and 5-1. That’s not the type of tennis I want to be playing”.

Petkovic celebrated her success by performing an on-court victory dance. “It started off as a bet with my coach” revealed Petkovic. “I’m very superstitious and since I started doing the dance I’m playing much better, so I’ll try to keep it up”. Petkovic will next be on court against Li Na for a place in the final four.
