Andy Roddick was defeated by Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets.
Andy Roddick was soundly beaten in three sets by an in-form Stanislas Wawrinka on SundayAndy Roddick has been eliminated from the Australian Open following a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 defeat at the hands of No. 19 seed Stanislas Wawrinka. Whilst Roddick never quite found his rhythm, his defeat can be attributed to a stunning display from his Swiss opponent, who hit 67 winners on his way to victory.
Wawrinka wowed the fans at the Rod Laver Arena, and became only the second man to beat Roddick in straight sets at Melbourne Park. The only other man to achieve that feat is fellow countryman Roger Federer, who swept aside Roddick two years ago in the semi-finals.
“I played an unbelievable match and it was one of my best, for sure”, said Wawrinka after the match. “To beat Roddick in three sets, it’s really good for me. I am very happy with my game tonight”. Wawrinka only faced three break points on serve here, whilst Roddick was broken three times.
Roddick’s inability to have his usual impact on serve may have been due to the fact that the match took place in the evening. The colder conditions make it tougher for the big servers to dictate play. “I wasn’t able to get the ball to jump much”, commented Roddick, “so a lot of the shots he hit were in his pocket and I was having a hard time getting it out of that zone”.
Wawrinka will now face Federer in the quarterfinals. Federer leads the head to head between the pairing 6-1, and will enter the match as the favourite. That said, Wawrinka might just surprise the world No. 2 if he plays like he did on Sunday.
