Robin Soderling is aiming to make a maiden third round appearance here in Melbourne.
Robin Soderling is up against Gilles Muller on Thursday in the second round of the Australian OpenWorld No. 4 Robin Soderling has never made it past the second round of the Australian Open, though this year he seems likely to turn a corner. He faces Gilles Muller in round two on Thursday, in a match that he’s widely expected to win. The big-hitting Swede certainly appeared to be in control against Potito Starace in round one, winning 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. A similar performance will be his goal here.
Soderling has a good record against Muller, leading their head-to-head 1-0. To add to this, the two players met at the Sunrise Challenger, a hard court event, in 2009. Soderling won the challenger match 6-3, 6-1, and with this in mind looks like a safe bet to reach the third round.
Muller may be able to threaten though. Some of his best Slam performances have come here in Melbourne. He reached the third round in 2009, though his best outing at a Slam remains his 2008 U.S Open campaign, when he reached the quarters. Muller has plenty of experience at this level, but he’ll need to turn in a first-rate performance to challenge Soderling here.
