Robin Soderling faces a tricky showdown with Aleksandr Dolgopolov in the fourth round of the Australian OpenRobin Soderling is enjoying a career-best run at the Australian Open. In five previous attempts the Swede failed to make it past the second round. Even last season, his most successful to date, he crashed out in round one. It looks like he’s turned a corner this year though, as he’s sailed through the first three rounds to set up a fourth round contest against Alexandr Dolgopolov. Soderling enters this match as the favourite, and has a real opportunity to reach the quarters.
Dolgopolov has ascended through the rankings at a decent pace over the past three years, and currently sits just inside the top fifty. He had no rankings points to defend here, so his outings over the past week should give him a huge boost, even if he loses on Monday.
Whilst Soderling is expected to win, the Ukranian outsider shouldn’t necessarily be considered a no-hoper here. His five set victory over No. 13 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1) demonstrated that he is capable of upsetting the odds, though he’ll have to dig deep to pull off yet another surprise victory.
This will be the first meeting between this pairing in official competition, making this contest a little tougher to predict. Even so, Soderling, who hasn’t lost a set in this competition yet, should be capable of reaching the quarters without any major scares.
