Rafael Nadal v David Ferrer – Australian Open live stream - watch now

Rafael Nadal faces a challenging quarterfinal against David Ferrer on Wednesday

Rafael Nadal is on the verge of making history, and stands only three victories away from a sensational Rafa Slam. The flu that he suffered from in Doha hasn’t impeded his progress so far, and he’s yet to lose a set in Melbourne. A textbook straight sets thrashing of Marin Cilic in the fourth round provided further evidence of his ability to win this event, and it looks like it will take something special to stop the Spaniard. That said, his quarterfinal opponent David Ferrer is one of the few people who might just be able to threaten him.

Ferrer secured a crucial four set victory over Milos Raonic in the last round, playing extremely well throughout. The tenacious Canadian, whose ranking barely represents his ability, threw everything he had at Ferrer, but couldn’t make a significant breakthrough.

Ferrer’s return game was exquisite throughout. The No. 7 seed got his racquet to serves that many with a greater reach than him could only dream of hitting back. He’ll have to work even harder on Wednesday though, as Nadal hasn’t even looked troubled here, and has more of an all-round game than Raonic.

Nadal leads the head to head with his fellow countryman 11-3. The pairing have a lengthy history, going back as far as 2004. Things don’t bode too well for Ferrer, who has lost seven consecutive matches against Nadal, winning only one set in the process.

Ferrer will need to be on top form on Wednesday to get anything from this game. Even so, he played brilliantly on Monday, and might stand a chance if he can put in a similar performance here.
