Fourth seed Maria Sharapova has overcome German Sabine Lisicki 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in a tight three-set match at Rod Laver Arena on Monday night.
Sharapova started the game strongly, breaking Lisicki's serve and racing out to a 3-0 lead. However, the 14th seed stormed back, winning six games in a row to take the set 6-3.
However, the Russian made immediate amends, breaking Lisicki early in the set and racing away with it, 6-2.
Sharapova then managed to outlast the German in a tense 58-minute deciding set.
The win for the fourth seed came despite her hitting 18 more unforced errors and only two more winners than her opponent.
