Na Li is just two wins away from being the first Chinese player to win a singles title at a Slam eventNa Li has made great progress at this year’s Australian Open, reaching the semifinals without even dropping a set or having to compete in a tiebreaker. Whilst media coverage has focused more heavily around the likes of Kim Clijsters, Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva, Li has emerged from under the radar as one of the major contenders for the singles title.
Li’s last opponent, Andrea Petkovic, is backing Li to go all the way this year. “It’s just the feeling, how she is on court, her confidence and the way she’s playing”, commented Petkovic. “I just feel she has a great chance to win the tournament. I don’t want to put pressure on her obviously. It’s just a feeling”.
Li will enter her next match as an outsider, though she stands every chance of winning. She faces Caroline Wozniacki, the world No. 1, in the final four. Li faced the Dane twice last season, winning both times. If Li can pull through and win this competition it will be a fantastic personal achievement, and a memorable day for Chinese tennis.
