Kim Clijsters and Vera Zvonareva will face off in a highly anticipated semi-final showdownKim Clijsters and Vera Zvonareva were tipped from the off to challenge for this year’s Australian Open title, and they will now meet in the semi-finals. This could turn out to be one of the most exciting matches of the competition, and should be a memorable one for the spectators.
Clijsters has really found her rhythm in Melbourne, and hasn’t even lost a set. She defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarters, 6-3, 7-6, and is yet to face any major scares. This might change on Friday though, as Zvonareva is a formidable opponent. The No. 2 seed is only one win away from a third successive Slam final, and will be looking to put a stop to the Belgian’s run.
Zvonareva has impressed here, recording a number of comfortable victories including a 6-2, 6-4 win against Petra Kvitova in the quarters. She’s yet to face any of the top 20 seeds, but is capable of competing with and beating the best players in the game.
Zvonareva won her last hard court match against Clijsters 6-4, 7-5. This match took place at the WTA Championships at the end of last season. Zvonareva has won three of the last four matches between the pairing, but trails in their overall head to head by 6 wins to 3. Clijsters last beat Zvonareva in last year’s U.S Open final. This was one of Clijsters’ best performances, and she only lost three games on her way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
This is a tough match to predict, and could easily go either way. If Clijsters wins, she’ll edge closer to earning a first Australian Open title. If Zvonareva wins, she will be one win away from a maiden Slam title. The winner of this match will face Caroline Wozniacki or Li Na in the final.
