Kim Clijsters faces in-form youngster Ekaterina Makarova in a potentially tricky fourth round showdown

Having emerged from a potentially troublesome clash with Alize Cornet, Kim Clijsters will now face Russian youngster Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round of the Australian Open. Clijsters has looked confident so far in Melbourne, though Makarova, who eliminated Nadia Petrova in round three, is a feisty opponent who will try to make life difficult for her.

Clijsters is considered to be a major contender here in Melbourne, and she’s expected to get through the fourth round unscathed. If she wins this event, and Caroline Wozniacki fails to make the semi’s, she will become the first mother to hold the No. 1 ranking spot. Wozniacki has already progressed to the quarters though, so the Belgian might have to wait a while before she can attempt to achieve this feat.

Makarova, who is ranked just inside the top fifty, will be fired up for this match but ultimately has a huge task ahead of her. Clijsters hasn’t lost a set all week, and even took apart Dinara Safina without losing a game. Makarova will need to produce something special here if she’s to stand much of a chance.
