Kim Clijsters is due to face Alize Cornet on Friday in round three of the Australian Open

Kim Clijsters has played superbly so far in Melbourne, and remains a major contender for the Australian Open title. She recorded yet another straightforward victory in round two, breezing past Carla Suarez Navarro in two sets (6-1, 6-3). Some pundits had predicted that Clijsters could run into difficulty against Navarro, though the Belgian outclassed her opponent on the day.

Her opponent on Friday will be French youngster Alize Cornet. Cornet reached the fourth round in Melbourne in 2009, and has the ability to do fairly well in this competition. Despite this, the world No. 83 won’t be anticipating an easy ride, and needs to put in one of her better performances in order to worry Clijsters.

These two players have never faced off in official competition, though Clijsters is regarded as a clear favourite here. If Clijsters can gain some momentum and apply the attacking style that she used so well against Navarro, then Cornet will need to dig deep to get anything from this match.
