Federer humbles Wawrinka in straight sets

Roger Federer was at his dominant best on Tuesday, thrashing Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets

Roger Federer seemed destined for a dogfight with compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka on Tuesday, but the match didn’t unfold as expected. Federer, no stranger to brilliance, took Wawrinka apart with ease, claiming a 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Federer’s performance included yet another of his trademark between-the-legs shots, which came as a response to a Wawrinka lob. Federer was offered an opportunity to make the shot twice in the same rally, but opted for a backhand instead.

Federer’s dazzling performance was only half of the story though. Wawrinka was unable to get a foothold in the match, and looked a shadow of the man that handed Andy Roddick a three set thrashing. Wawrinka did manage to produce some good shots, but Federer continued to grind him down, and his hopes faded as the match progressed.

Federer is playing some of the best tennis of career right now, and many of his post U.S Open displays have been spectacular. He’s now only two wins away from winning yet another Slam, and is arguably the biggest threat to Rafael Nadal’s ‘Rafa Slam’ attempt.
