Djokovic cruises past Berdych in straight sets

Novak Djokovic claimed a sublime three set victory over Tomas Berdych on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open

In a matchup between two genuine Australian Open contenders, Novak Djokovic beat Tomas Berdych in three sets, 6-1, 7-6, 6-1. Djokovic entered the match as favourite, though few people expected such a one-sided victory for the Serb. The world No. 3 dominated throughout, whilst Berdych crumbled in front of a packed out Rod Laver Arena.

Berdych had been playing tremendous tennis here in Melbourne, though his form deserted him as he faced his biggest challenge to date. Berdych struggled with his serve, managing to hit only 51 of his 96 serves within the lines. He even made 5 double faults as he slumped out of the competition. Djokovic bettered his Czech opponent on almost every level, striking more winners, and hitting less unforced errors.

Djokovic has been touted as an outsider to win this tournament from the off, though his sights don’t yet appear to be set on the final. Commenting on his next match, Djokovic said, “We all know I’m playing Federer and he’s the best player ever, so it’s going to be tough”.
