Novak Djokovic recorded an emphatic 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andy Murray to claim his second Australian Open titleNovak Djokovic has claimed a second Australian Open title with a stunning performance against Andy Murray. Djokovic capped a phenomenal fortnight with what was perhaps his best performance yet, leaving a hapless Murray wondering just what exactly he has to do to win a Slam.
Djokovic, if he continues playing like this, could be the man to threaten the Nadal-Federer Slam stranglehold. The Serb drubbed Federer in the semi’s, and certainly appears to be a more mature and complete player than he was when he won this event in 2008. Speaking after today’s final Djokovic insisted that Federer and Nadal are still the dominant forces in the game, but expressed contentment with his own progress.
“I feel I’m a better player now than I was three years ago, because I think that physically I’m stronger, I’m faster”, stated Djokovic. “Mentally, I’m more motivated on the court. I know how to react in certain moments, and I know how to play on a big stage”. This big stage confidence is perhaps what enabled him to deny Murray from claiming Britain’s first Slam in 75 years here.
Murray remained reasonably upbeat following the match. When questioned about his Slam credentials, he remarked, “I want to try and win one of course…but if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen”.
