In a match of long baseline rallies, Cilic's superior consistency on serve - he won 83 per cent of points when he got his opening delivery in - and off the ground, forged his match-winning advantage.

Games went with serve until the 49-minute mark of the match, at which point Wawrinka, leading 5-4 and having missed four previous break-point opportunities, made the crucial breakthrough that clinched the opening set.

The momentum swung in the second set, Cilic using his big off-forehand to run No.19 seed Wawrinka around the court, exacting a break on his second opportunity in the fifth game for a 3-2 lead.

Wawrinka broke back to square the set at 4-4 but immediately relinquished the advantage to trail 4-5, Cilic serving it out to level the match at one set apiece.

Cilic broke in the opening game of the third set, and a second time in the middle of the set to open up a three-game lead courtesy of some impressive net play and a limited unforced error count, advancing to a two-sets-to-one lead.

After a long deuce game at the start of the fourth set, Cilic again secured a break of the Wawrinka serve, advancing to a 2-0 lead in the next game. Wawrinka still had some fight in him, however, breaking back immediately before holding to bring the set back on level terms at 2-2.

Using his crunching forehand to expose Wawrinka's inconsistency off the ground, Cilic steadied and held to lead 3-2 before breaking again in the seventh game to advance to 4-2 and holding for 5-2.

Wawrinka faced two match points on his serve in the next game, the first coming when he shanked a backhand wide after breaking a racquet string. The Swiss man hung on though, serving up his 11th ace of the match to take the score to 3-5.

It was left to the No.14-seeded Croat to serve out the match, which he did for the loss of one point, bringing up two match points with his 17th volley winner of the match. He closed out the victory with his 10th ace, which he followed with an elaborate victory dance.

In advancing to his third consecutive fourth round at the Australian Open, Cilic extended his head-to-head record against Wawrinka to 5-1.
