Bernard Tomic is through to the fourth round of Australian Open 2012 after winning 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 against Alexandr Dolgopolov.
In a five-set thriller that kept the Rod Laver Arena crowd roaring from start to finish, Tomic recovered from dropping the first set to come through two very tight tie-breaks and take the lead.
Dolgopolov, who received treatment for lower back pain, fought back to take the fourth, but the fifth was all about the Australian 19-year-old, who kept his cool to serve out the win on his second match point.
He becomes the first Australian male to reach the fourth round since Lleyton Hewitt in 2010, the elder Australian losing to Roger Federer. But a quirk of fate, Tomic will face the same opponent, the former world No.1, for only the second time in his career.
More to come.
