Australian Open – Venus Williams v Sara Errani match preview

Venus Williams faces Sara Errani in the first round of the Australian Open

Despite having not played at this level since the U.S Open last September, Venus Williams is expected to perform well at this year’s Australian Open. She begins her quest for the title on Monday with a first round match against World No. 43 Sara Errani. This match should prove to be an intriguing clash of styles, given that Venus is comfortably over half a foot taller than her Italian opponent.

Venus had a decent run in Melbourne last year, but eventually fell in the quarters against Na Li in a tense three-setter. She has a history of playing well here, but she hasn’t made it past the last eight since 2003, when she finished as the runner-up. She has yet to win this event, but there’s still a chance that she can add the Australian Open to her already impressive list of Slam victories.

Whilst Errani is an outsider here, she’s still capable of testing Williams. She made the last thirty-two last year in Melbourne, where she lost to Yanina Wickmayer in three sets. Errani also managed to beat several highly ranked opponents last year, though it remains to be seen how well she plays against the World No. 5. This will be the first official matchup between the two players.
