Former finalist Hewitt will be hoping to compete though he faces a race against time to overcome a chronic foot problem. Dellacqua's wildcard is also no surprise as the Aussie has a consistent track record of success at Melbourne Park.

Although she's currently ranked outside the top 100, she reached a career high of 39 back in 2008, reaching the fourth round of her home slam that year. And after some consistent results on the Aussie challenger circuit at the end of 2011, she's shown she's on the rise once again.

Giant killer Matthew Ebden has also been given a chance along with 20 year old Olivia Rogowska (who made the final of the recent wildcard playoffs) and 19 year old Ben Mitchell who climbed almost 400 places up the rankings in 2011 to his current placing of 227th.

"You pretty much play your whole career to compete in Grand Slams, so it's a dream come true to play at the Australian Open," Mitchell said. "I'm going to take it one step at a time and hopefully I can do well. I've had a great year working with Brent (Larkham) at the Australian Institute for Sport and physically I feel in the best shape of my life."

A lot of the media attention will centre on 15 year old Wimbledon junior champion Ashleigh Barty, a girl with a prodigious future ahead of her. Barty forced the hand of Tennis Australia by winning the wildcard playoff earlier this month.
