Australian Open 2010 - Peer picks up the pace

Shahar Peer has come back from a set down to defeat Czech Lucie Hradecka in their first-round match on Wednesday, eventually prevailing 6-7(5) 6-2 6-1.

Czech Hradecka, ranked No.64, made some simple errors in her opening service game as Peer snatched an early advantage.

Hradecka’s lead was short-lived as Hradecka broke straight back, but the breaks didn’t stop there.

Peer broke Hradecka again in the third game as both players struggled to assert any authority on the match.

It was Peer who looked the goods early, opening up a 4-2 lead only for some undisciplined play on the Israeli’s behalf allowing her opponent to muscle her way back into the match.

Predictably, the set ended in a tie-breaker as the baseline sluggers kept their distance from the net, both content to play the match out from the back of the court.

In the tie-breaker, Hradecka opened up an early lead and held on to win it 7-5.

In the second set, the pro-Peer crowd made some noise to lift the 29th seed, and she responded.
 
Games went on serve with the set in the balance at 2-2, but then Peer reeled off four consecutive games to take the set 6-2 and push the match to a decider.

In the final set, Peer got the early break then picked up the pace as she won games at will to take the set 6-1.

Peer now moves into the second round, where she will play Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova.
