Jarmila Groth takes on Yanina Wickmayer in the opening match of the night session at the Australian Open.

This is a fascinating opening round clash. After Sam Stosur, Groth is Australia's next big hope in the women's draw and she will receive plenty of support from a packed Rod Laver arena. She's also in much better form than her compatriot having just picked up her second WTA title in Hobart.

However she would have hoped for better than drawing 21st seed Wickmayer in the opening round. The world number 23 has been ranked as high as 12 in the world and reached the Auckland final a week ago. She also saves some of her best tennis for the Australian summer swing, reaching the fourth round last year before going down in three tight sets to eventual finalist Justine Henin.

Wickmayer won their only previous match 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in a challenger a couple of years ago.

The winner of this one could actually go some way. Both players are in form and a place in the second week is definitely possible.

Prediction: Groth to pull through in three on a wave of partisan support
