10th seed Nalbandien crashes out to Chinese underdog

- 21 Jan 2009
David Nalbandien, one of the early favourites for the Australian Open 2009, has crashed out at the hands of comeback kid Yen-Hsun Lu, who pulled off the biggest win of his career.
The Chinese underdog came from two sets to one down to post a 6-4 5-7 4-6 6-4 6-2 victory.

Lu looked in trouble when he lost the third set having twice been a break of serve to the good. However, refusing to lie down he managed to force a fifth and final set. Nalbandian, a semi-finalist in Melbourne in 2006, was broken in the very first game of the decider, slamming his racquet to the floor after losing it.

Lu now meets Tommy Robredo in the first time the Chinese player has progressed to the last 32 of a Grand Slam.
