Australian Open 2009 - Preview and odds of the road to the final

- 20 Jan 2009

The Australian Open’s only just getting started but that doesn’t mean we can’t look to the final, after all at the time of writing Andy Murray’s looking good to do well.

Here’s how the tournament may play out if the top seeds push the outsiders away in the first 3 rounds and get to the Quarter finals.

QF1: Nadal (1) would meet Simon Giles (6) in one Quarter final, in which Nadal is favourite to progress at odds of 1/2 from Paddypower.

QF2: Murray (4) would face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (5) in another Quarter final and Victor Chandler sees Murray as 4/7 Favourite to progress.

QF3: Reigning champ Djokovic (3) would face Roddick (7) in the third quarter final, and the djok is 10/11 favourite with Victor Chandler. Finally, in the last quarter final

QF4: Federer would face Del Potro (8), and bookmakers make Federer the favourite with odds of 1/3 (Paddypower)

If the world rankings and bookmakers are anything to go by the semi finalists from those ties should be the top 4 seeds, giving us two very interesting semi finals.

SF1: Murray (4) v Nadal (1)
SF2: Djokovic (3) v Federer (2)

It’s hard to see the final from these potential semi clashes but from a Britsh perspective it’d be nice to think that we may see a Murray v Djokovic final, at odds of 8/1 from Paddypower or Murray v Federer at odds of 10/3 from Paddypower.

F: Murray (4) v Federer (2)
Champion: Andy Murray

It’s all just speculation at such an early point in the tournament, but it’d be hard to see anybody outside the top 5 winning this tournament, and the fact that Murray is seeded fourth and currently has odds of 3/1 (Sportingbet) is enough to whet the appetites of British Tennis fan’s nationwide.
